[KITlist] Chief Operating Officer (San Jose, CA)
Please direct your responses to: recruiting@socialthinking.com
About Social Thinking Publishing, Inc.
The focus of Social Thinking operations, services, and products is to explore how the social mind works to help individuals figure out how to use more effective social skills. We create and evolve strategies and curriculum that teach and help foster social learning in individuals who are academically bright but struggle to develop and maintain successful social relationships in school, at work, in the community, and at home. Social Thinking provides concepts and evidence-based teachings through practical frameworks and strategies. Our company is considered to be cutting edge in our field and drives thought leadership related to social learning concepts.
We work with individuals age 3 through adulthood who have different diagnostic labels such as high functioning Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, PDD-NOS, ADHD, NVLD, or murky undiagnosed social learning issues.
Social Thinking is located in San Jose, has been in existence for over 14 years, has over $6 million in annual revenue and a staff of 25. Social Thinking currently offers 22 different products we've published (books, games, posters, etc.) for ages 3.5 through adulthood. We also have an active conference division. The Social Thinking Training and Speakers Collaborative consists of 9 different speakers located around the US and in Asia. We provide 12 different full-day workshops and in the last year have presented information in over 12 different countries. We publish, teach, consult, do clinical training and research.
While we are a for-profit company, our business more accurately reflects a mission-driven, service-based organization. We value humor, hard work, grit and a sense of purpose, yet we in no way reflect a typical Silicon Valley business. We measure our success by the number of people we reach and help with our information each year.
The Position – Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Social Thinking has been growing steadily and is poised to dramatically accelerate growth in the coming year. We are looking for a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded individual with experience scaling an organization, leading staff, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. The COO must be a leader who is able to help others at delivering measurable, cost-effective results that make our vision a reality. Importantly, the successful COO will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to this mission. While it is essential that the COO bring efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, is it also critical that the team retain the creative spark that drives us.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Founder and CEO of Social Thinking, the COO will lead all internal operations related to conference organization and product production and will have the following responsibilities:
 Work in partnership with the CEO and executive team to create the internal strategic plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it.
 Serve as the internal leader of the organization:
o Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget
o Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization
o Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridge national and regional operations and support an open-door policy among all staff
 Lead and manage staff who have the following responsibilities:
o Front Office
 Administrate HR
 Improve and maintain our Customer Service outreach for processing, conferences, products, family/client services
 Organize IT
 Coordinate clinical services with therapists
 Ensure that all vendors/partners renew their contracts
 Cultivate the values of ST within the organization
 Instill a human capital development and "coaching" culture within ST; upgrade human resources functions including: training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation and recruiting
o Supply Chain Manager
 Vendor management of our fulfillment center
 Maintain active Inventory monitoring and work with product development for re-ordering
 Develop and maintain strategic plan to minimize shipping costs in different regions, internationally.
 Manage the processing department to assure cost containment, productivity and accuracy.
 Inventory tracking as it moves to and between different regional warehouses.
 Manage our SAP-POS system
 General problem solving to create highly efficient product processing and shipping services to client
o Finance
 Develop and maintain an accounting system that provides the organization with quick access to financial information and enables strategic budgeting
 Coordinate actively with Supply Chain Manager and Technology Manager to assure fluid data flow within and across departments
o Technology
 Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall
 Assist with development of updated website and more efficient shopping cart in 2014
 Increase company automation of systems
o Conferences and Marketing
 Continue to organize and run 15-20 profitable 2-3 day conferences annually, across the USA
 Work with finance to explore producing conferences in Canada
 Establish and maintain an active plan to market our brand, conferences, and products, using an array of media/marketing platforms
 Evolve our brand as we expand our current markets
o New Product and Conference Development
 Work closely with product development manager in preparing products for market
 Coordinate product launches with marketing
 Develop new conferences workshop days
 Establish and maintain E-Learning plan to increase outreach
 Work with the external Board of Advisers in quarterly meetings and serve on several board committees
Key Qualifications
As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of Social Thinking and be driven by the mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate who has proven experience in scaling a multi-site organization and a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, diverse team. We are looking for a unique blend of management, critical thinking, passion and flexibility.
The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience with a for-profit organization. As noted, this is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a "values-driven" organization will be highly prized. Additional requirements include:
 Results-proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness
 Strategic Vision and Agility-ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
 Capacity Building—ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, develop a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly
 Leadership and Organization-exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team to enable people to succeed
 Action Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary
 General Management—thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing
 Solid educational background—undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree highly desired
Compensation
This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the evolution of a fast-growing, highly respected organization. We are seeking an individual of outstanding quality with a distinguished track record. Social Thinking is prepared to offer a very attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary as well as health, 401(k), and vacation benefits.
