Position Overview:
The Email Marketing Associate is part of the Annual Fund & Digital Communications team, a sub-team of the Development and Communications Department (DevCom), a passionate and highly-effective global force of marketers and fundraisers powering the organization's ambitious goals. The Annual Fund & Digital Communications team is charged with delivering the marketing and retail-level fundraising goals of Room to Read.
This position will lead the organization's email marketing strategy and execution using Salesforce Marketing Cloud, with the goal of increasing donation conversions and supporter engagement and retention. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver with strong email marketing experience, keen knowledge of industry best practices and trends, and a desire to make a meaningful impact and inspire others to join the movement to end childhood illiteracy and gender inequality in education. As part of a globally-distributed team, the Email Marketing Associate will support and collaborate with our teams in New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore, Zurich, Hong Kong and Mumbai. This role will report to the Annual Fund & Digital Communications Manager and will be based in Room to Read's San Francisco office.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Email Marketing Strategy & Optimization (35%)
Use email marketing to increase one-time donation conversions, acquire new monthly donors, and increase donor retention
Use testing and experimentation to optimize email strategy, including determining best-performing subject/from lines for different segments, ideal send times/days and pacing between emails, most successful CTAs (links vs buttons, etc.), efficacy of plain text emails vs HTML, and optimal email length
Collaborate with Marketing team to strategize, build, launch, and optimize email journeys and automations to steward donors and cultivate leads
Set a specific, measurable goal for every email send (website conversion, form completion, brand awareness, etc.)
Strengthen donor stewardship and retention by implementing new ways to collect subscriber content preferences (e.g. interest in specific program or country), and use dynamic content to deliver more targeted messages
Identify opportunities for A/B testing and conduct tests; report on findings and incorporate into future emails
Prepare and share regular email performance reports, including deliverability rate, open rate, click rate, spam rate, unsubscribe rate, conversation rate, results of any tests, and anecdotal learnings about what worked/didn't work
Stay up-to-date on current email marketing best practices and research findings from other email marketers to experiment with new ideas and increase performance metrics (e.g. optimizing emails to work with Google's latest Gmail upgrades)
Email Operations & Production (35%)
Optimize email production workflow to shorten production times, employing production and testing best practices, new tools for collaboration, simplified content and templates, and efficient team coordination
Use UTM parameters for all emails to ensure that website traffic from email campaigns is consistently tracked in Google Analytics in a reportable way
Use Classy source codes for all solicitation emails to track donation conversions in Salesforce
Regularly report on list growth and implement list hygiene best practices
Develop and follow rigorous testing and QA protocols for all emails so that every email renders properly on all primary inboxes and devices, all links work, all links have UTM parameters, all images render, and copy is error-free
Maintain working knowledge of Room to Read branding guidelines to ensure brand consistency for all email communications
Craft compelling email copy or assign copywriting to other team members as appropriate
Ensure that overall deliverability remains at a high level and our relationship with ISPs is monitored and addressed as needed; serve as the organization's primary expert on email deliverability and stay up-to-date on industry standards and best practices
Create and manage subscriber preferences
Ensure that Room to Read complies with data protection and privacy laws as they relate to email marketing, consulting with legal team as needed
Collaborate with Shared Services team on management of Salesforce data as it relates to email marketing needs
Global Email Support (20%)
Act as Room to Read's email marketing expert globally, informing the email marketing efforts of 6-7 team members in other global offices or departments on an ad hoc basis
Train and provide ongoing support to 6-7 other Marketing Cloud users on staff
Configure and curate a collection of mobile responsive templates in Marketing Cloud for global use
Create and manage an email marketing calendar to avoid overlap and excessive email volume, and ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on the calendar
Review small volume of email messages created by other users for quality and brand consistency
General Marketing Support (10%)
Assist with other marketing and fundraising projects as needed, including copywriting, market research, supporter surveys, and various donor engagement communications
Support the Annual Fund and Digital Communications team to deliver global revenue goals by supporting overall global email strategy
Undertake other duties as necessary
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree
2-3 years of relevant experience in email marketing
Salesforce and Marketing Cloud experience or experience with other equivalent CRM and Email Service Provider
Experience with sending different types of emails such as mass send, journey, triggered and automated emails
Experience conducting A/B tests
Knowledge of email marketing best practices and trends
Ability to manage projects effectively and manage project teams to coalesce deliverables into a timely and high-quality product
Strong understanding of information/content architecture and web copy
HTML/CSS skills, with experience coding emails preferred
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to juggle competing priorities and consistently meet deadlines
Comfort with high levels of responsibility and ownership
Demonstrated ability to optimize workflows
Ability to stay focused on achieving strategic, measurable outcomes while also executing day-to-day tasks
Excellent writing skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work flexible hours when needed to accommodate multiple time zones
Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided
Preferred:
Graphic design experience with tools such as Photoshop and InDesign
Experience working with creative teams, graphic designers and copywriters
Good knowledge of CAN-SPAM and GDPR regulations
Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a nonprofit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work
and low overhead
Experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
