Job Classification Title: Editor 2

The Clayman Institute for Gender Research creates knowledge and translates research into action for gender equality. As the pioneering gender research institute in the United States, we have been conducting innovative and ground-breaking gender research since 1974. We ask big questions to further equality and incubate initiatives to create change. The current focus is on Moving Beyond the Stalled Gender Revolution. Scholars conduct innovative and cutting-edge research to understand why the gender revolution has stalled and to discover workable solutions to advance equality.

One of the Institute's key priorities has been to translate gender research to broad and non-academic audiences to accelerate change and inform public conversations. The Communications Manager advances the Institute's public engagement and translation of gender research through our newsletter, website, written communications, and media relations. This includes, but is not limited to, disseminating Gender News; training graduate students, postdocs and early career scholars to write for broad audiences; and engaging with the Stanford media and media-at-large. Specific responsibilities are outlined below.

-The Communications Manager produces our monthly e-newsletter, Gender News. This includes planning a schedule of articles and shorter entries, contracting with writers and Institute fellows to write the articles, managing and supporting student and fellow writers, editing and overseeing the approval of all articles, inserting photographs, laying out the newsletter, and measuring the success of our communications via Google Analytics and Constant Contact. The Communications Manager will redesign the newsletter to better meet the needs of our audience.

-The Communications Manager will write material representing the Institute's core content, including but not limited to, website verbiage, event notices, and Gender News articles when necessary. The Communications Manager will review presentation materials and create talking points about the Institute.

-The Communications Manager will oversee the Institute's social media, website, media presence, and related tasks. She/he/they will post regularly to Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, oversee event photographers, and manage the use of photography in our communications.

-The Communications Manager will build media relationships to maximize visibility on campus and off. She/he/they will maintain relationships with Stanford communications officers and media outlets to translate Institute research and draw attention to our research, fellows, and programming/events.

-If time permits, the Communications Manager will produce our annual research magazine, UpRising. Major project management needs of UpRising include: planning a schedule of articles, overseeing contributors, and contracting with designers and printers.

An ideal candidate will be an experienced writer who can also effectively and professionally edit others' writing: students, early career scholars, and advanced scholars. The ideal candidate will be precise with great attention to detail while upholding our high standards for writing and public engagement. We are looking for someone who is flexible, collaborative, and who can contribute to the success of the Institute team. An independent self-starter who can identify needs and recommend improvements in our communications is a must. A background in gender and gender research is not necessary, although a background that includes engagement with research and/or complex forms of content is required.

This is a 50% benefited one-year, fixed-term position with possibility of renewal for up to three years.
