Full time position: UX Technologist / Researcher


Position Summary:


At Samsung UXCA, we are changing the face of smartphones and cloud services.


Samsung's User Experience Center (UXCA) located in San Jose, California is seeking a Technologist/Researcher to support the UXCA Mobile and Service Labs in developing new smartphones, tablets, and cloud services.


This position will report to the Director of Enabling Technologies.


Primary responsibilities:


-Build and curate an internal library of mobile devices interesting consumer electronics products, and novel materials. Candidate will maintain the library contents through a check-in/check-out system, advise on new additions to the library, and work with designers and engineers to record interesting findings and insights about library devices.



-Maintain an acute and current understanding of the technology industry landscape, and document findings by curating an internal blog that is broadcast to all the designers, engineers and managers in UXCA.



-Take research requests from the UX and ID teams, review the related technology space, and provide current landscape analysis and insights. The goal here is to make sure that designers are up to speed on the current state of the art when they launch into a project (i.e. "what are the most innovative, out-of-the-box email apps.").



Common duties:  


Tech Blog:

- Stay current on tech news through reading, attending events, and networking.

- Maintain and add articles to internal blog, and technology tracking database.

- Aggregate links to external news, technologies.  Filter by relevance to UXCA projects

- Manage interface with IT to enable blog, database, and newsletter features.

- Coordinate with a geographically diverse team.


Library:

- Maintain and add devices or materials to the library tracking system

- Track devices in the library system and within UXCA

- Check-in and check-out devices to library patrons

- Recall devices from patrons when due

- Search for new and upcoming mobile devices

- Review and recommend purchasing requests for library additions

- Refine and advise on new library tracking system features


Research:

- Work closely with UX designers and industrial designers.

- Review informational and project needs with individuals and design teams.

- Use web resources, personal insights and personal network to collect information on the subject.

- If needed, order best product examples for Library

- Generate landscape reports to summarize findings and present back to design teams.


Required Qualifications:  

- BS or BA in one or more of the following fields: computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial design journalism, library sciences.

- 5+ years of work experience.

- A strong sense of vision to lead the blog and library efforts.

- Strong leadership skills.

- Technical generalist with a "maven" level of interest in consumer electronics: mobile devices, sensing, cloud services, UI.

- Clear writing and communication skills.

- Top notch organizational skills.

- A good intuition: ability to sort bogus press releases from real technical advancements.

- User level experience with two or more of Mac OS X, Windows 7, iOS, Android, Windows, Windows Mobile.





UX Technologist + Mechanical Engineer, UXCA Enabling Technology Team


Samsung UXCA is seeking a mechanical engineer with significant industry and applied experience to support next-generation mobile device development. The UXCA Enabling Technology team supports user experience and user interface designers, by educating them on available technologies, constraints, feasibility, and productization planning. We are building a world-class team of technologists with background ranging from applied physics to sensors to machine vision to cloud service technologies.



Responsibilities:

    Assess and maintain knowledge base of current state of the art within designated technology areas (both internal and external to Samsung).

    Work closely with with the UI/UX teams on their projects, to understand their development goals, and seek enabling technologies.

    Drive feasibility evaluations and experiments to quantify and qualify enabling technologies.

    Work with EE and ID on prototyping to create test and demonstration platforms.

    Work with legal/IP to create patents on technologies we develop.

    Understand and influence commercialization process.

    Work with the UXCA teams to develop and refine highly vetted prototypes that can be transferred to the commercialization process with minimal and/or well understood development risks.  


Requirements:

    BS in Engineering, MS Preferred

    5+ years experience in product development, ship-or-die, organizations.

    Domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas: RF, Sensors, Machine Vision, AI, Cloud Services.

    Applied experience in one or more of the following: digital electronics, analog electronics, embedded programming, high-level programming, consumer electronics manufacturing, test engineering, robotics.

    Experience writing and reviewing patents in a technical domain.

    Up to 25% travel, some international.

    Experience working with and leveraging cross-functional teams.

Software Prototyping Lead


Position Summary

Samsung's Mobile User Experience lab, located in San Jose, California, is designing and developing the mobile user experiences that will power future generations of mobile devices from Samsung.


The lab is currently recruiting world-class software engineers to work in a small, fast-paced team to explore novel user interfaces, interaction models and data mining/aggregation that smartphones and tablet have brought to consumers. Successful candidates need to be self-driven and be able to work with technical and non-technical team members.


Major Responsibilities

•Define and implement software architectures for use in Android applications •Architect and collaborate in the creation of public APIs for Samsung created services on mobile devices •Coordinate and collaboratively develop code with external teams and companies •Research current state-of-the-art in scientific journals and publications •Document and present results to the highest levels within Samsung Mobile •Aid in the definition of hardware prototype requirements and architectures •Collaborate with design leads on producing stunning, cutting edge interfaces


Qualifications

•Java with an emphasis in object oriented design patterns •C/C++ with an emphasis in low level hardware interaction •Algorithm development and optimization for processing and filtering data on mobile platforms •Android development (libraries, services, activities) •Proficient with Android SDK r13-15 •Experience with Android NDK a plus •Adept with shell scripts, Python, Perl, etc.

•Experience analyzing and debugging complex multithreaded applications •Experience with two or more Mac OS, Linux, Windows 7 required •Experience using with revision control systems with a team (git, Perforce, svn, cvs, etc.) •Experience with Hudson, Jenkins or Maven a plus •Excellent written and verbal communications skills •Ability to occasionally travel within the US and internationally a plus •MS+ in CS, CE or EE; BS with substantial experience will be considered •5+ programming year experienced preferred (less for the right candidate)

This position can be based out of our UX Center in San Jose, CA (near the airport) or in our Boulder, CO office (Broadway and Pearl).
