You like to be involved in everything from customer and business development deals to product development to regulatory compliance, employment, customer support, IP, and corporate and stockholder matters. You are a "jack of all trades" with demonstrated expertise in Internet services, technology and business law. As Elance's only in-house counsel, you will report to the Vice President, Finance & Legal, and work closely with multiple business units and the management team, to play a vital role in creating the legal and policy framework that enables Elance to grow and thrive. Here's what you need to know:
Your Responsibilities:
• Work with the business development and enterprise sales teams to negotiate and document deals of all sizes
• Work with the product, engineering and global payments business units to develop agreements for new services
• Work with talent acquisition and HR to support employment, labor, and independent contracting issues
• Develop a deep understanding of employment classification and US and international workforce management issues
• Support customer service to advise on customer issues and internal and external investigations
• Keep current on compliance and regulatory issues
• Help manage the company's intellectual property portfolio and strategy
• Assist in corporate and stockholder matters
• Advise senior management on legal issues affecting the company
• Consult and manage outside counsel as appropriate to achieve company objectives on time and on budget
• Collaborate with the entire Elance team to contribute to the continuous refinement of product strategy, business opportunities and anything else that helps Elance expand our market leading position.
• Lead by example. This is a very hands-on role for a great in-house lawyer who likes to be in the trenches.
Qualifications/Experience:
• JD from a top-tier law school and license to practice in California
• Five to eight years of experience in a combination of commercial transactions and Internet services a must
• Top law firm experience required
• Expertise drafting and negotiating business development, license, sales, IP and services agreements is required
• Some in-house experience preferred, in-house experience supporting contracts or business development a plus
• Working knowledge of employment and independent contracting law and issues, and a history of HR support a plus
• Working knowledge of IP law and IP portfolio management a plus
• Working knowledge of electronic payments systems and regulation a plus
• International experience a plus
• Demonstrated problem-solver
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Sound and practical business judgment
• Flexibility and passion to thrive in a fast-paced informal startup environment.
