Director of Strategic Marketing and Business Development
Portola Pharmaceuticals discovers and develops innovative therapeutics based on targets with established proof of concept that are designed to provide significant advances over current treatments for cardiovascular and autoimmune/inflammatory diseases. Portola scientists have successfully collaborated for over 15 years on the discovery and development of novel small molecule agents targeting platelets, coagulation pathways and protein kinases. In thrombosis, Portola is independently developing betrixaban and PRT4445. In inflammation, Portola is collaborating with Biogen Idec to develop and commercialize highly selective, novel oral Syk inhibitors for the treatment of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The collaboration's lead molecule, PRT2607, has been shown to be a highly potent and specific oral inhibitor of Syk. Portola's broad chemistry capability also has led to the discovery of dual inhibitors of Syk and Janus Kinase (JAK) for chronic autoimmune indications and oncology. We are looking for a Director of Marketing with excellent communication, (written and verbal), analytic and strategic marketing skills to lead commercial efforts for the Betrixaban phase III clinical program and serve an integral role in the early commercial efforts for an accelerated development path universal Factor Xa inhibitor antidote.
This high profile role will be responsible for providing strategic commercial direction to clinical programs and executing upon pre-commercialization efforts associated with disease state education. Key activities include leading cross-functional teams to develop target product profiles, developing viable commercial forecasts (including primary market research), building product positioning, advancing life cycle management and either lead or support all other key marketing activities.
Ultimately this individual will need to demonstrate excellent leadership ability. Success in this role will be determined by evidence of a super-vigilant commitment to proactive problem solving as well as an ability to inform and escalates risks upward appropriately.
In addition, your main responsibilities will include –
• Work in collaboration with R&D, clinical and marketing to develop a network of academic key opinion leaders to serve as consultants product assessments, clinical development plans, competitive intelligence and for business development opportunities
• Attend key clinical and scientific meetings and develop external relationships with scientific and clinical researchers, industry consultants and potential partners to help identify and evaluate new opportunities.
• Lead analytical activities needed to assess revenue forecasts, sales force planning, marketing planning, R&D investments, P&L, financial metrics, market research, competitive analysis, KOL research and portfolio impact .
• Create compelling strategic and commercial justifications of recommended new opportunities including detailed financial, competitive, and commercial analysis for presentation to Portola Senior Management team.
We require that you have -
• Relevant degree, with strong emphasis in business and life sciences. Graduate degree preferred, but not required.
• Minimum of six - ten years in bio-pharmaceutical industry in business development, investment banking/ research, strategic consulting or investing
• Strong knowledge of cardiovascular and immune biology and clinical development
• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and individual companies, drug development, drug discovery, sales and marketing of therapeutic agents, therapeutic markets, licensing and patents, networking and persuasion with third parties.
• Superior communication, influencing and negotiation skills, both verbal and written.
• Must be able to lead multi-disciplinary teams.
• Expected 20-30% travel
