MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
Position Description
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to CuriOdyssey's mission to give more kids the
superpower of science, through education, animal interaction and exploration of the natural world.
Reporting to the Marketing Director, the marketing and communications manager is responsible
for planning and implementing strategies to build museum attendance, revenue and brand
awareness. The Marketing Manager will develop advertising and publicity campaigns, promotions,
email marketing campaigns and other marketing initiatives to promote CuriOdyssey to attract
visitors from the greater mid-peninsula area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develop and execute compelling consumer brand advertising in support of our mission
* Working closely with the marketing director, advertising agency and other partners, responsibilities include:
o Develop marketing campaigns and manage process: set goals for each campaign,
write briefs for the agency, gather and track key assets (copy, photos, videos, key
facts, etc.) as needed
o Manage concept review and selection: Organize meetings for agency to share
proposed concepts, articulate a point of view based on campaign goals, gather
feedback from key stakeholders, and provide clear feedback and next steps to
agency
o Manage production process and logistics: Gather image and copy assets, manage
usage rights, copy review and art direction review to ensure brand consistency and
scientific accuracy;
o Plan and buy media: review agency recommendations and provide input on target
audience, media mix, timing, budget allocation and specific media placements
o Analyze results: Monitor the success of marketing plans and promotions by
tracking data, analyzing results and sharing insights and modifying as needed
o Manage budget: Oversee advertising media and production expenses, including
tracking monthly planned vs. actual spending, processing invoices and reconciling
discrepancies as needed
o Create and social media communications: Develop calendar, copy and assets to
promote CuriOdyssey through our social media platforms
* Work with education director to promote programs throughout the year
* Provide marketing recommendations for other programs as needed including membership,
facility rentals and exhibit openings
* Lead the email marketing strategy for museum visitors and subscribers
o Plan and execute regularly occurring and ad hoc email campaigns designed to drive
visitation and engagement
o Source and select photo and video assets
o Write and edit compelling email copy that inspires action
o Monitor and analyze email metrics and use data to inform strategic
recommendations
* Write newsletters and annual report
* Manage consumer research as needed including annual visitor and brand awareness surveys
* Suggest recommendations for creative promotions, new media opportunities and other tactics
that help achieve goals
* Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
* Desire to work in a mission-oriented, small museum and zoo
* Proactive, strategic thinker and problem-solver
* Strong writing and editing skills with proven success writing marketing copy that drives
results
* Ability to create non-linear forms of writing to fit dynamic web style, including SEO
* Experience in managing annual marketing budget
* Ability to think creatively and to see ideas through to completion
* Well organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
* Superb oral and written communication skills
* Knowledge of voice, tone and style guides
* Strong interpersonal skills; desire and ability to cultivate and maintain effective
relationships with staff, vendors and outside partners
* Strong work ethic, flexibility and willingness to get the job done
* Ability to work both independently and as a team member
* Responds quickly to time-sensitive queries and successfully conducts business in a fast-
paced environment.
* Excellent analytical skills and ability to use data to measure results
* Ability to contribute creative ideas that align with strategic goals
* Self-motivated, creative problem solver
* Proficient in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Photoshop and InDesign
* Able and willing to work occasional early/late/weekend hours as needed
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent
experience:
* Minimum three years' professional experience in marketing or promotions;
Undergraduate degree, preferably in marketing, communications, journalism or related
area of study
* Some experience with media buying preferred;
* Some experience with SEM a plus; some experience in email marketing preferred
