Stanford University's Continuing Studies Program (CSP) is a premier adult learning program offering more than 500 courses, workshops, and seminars to more than 16,000 students annually. The mission of Stanford Continuing Studies is to share the rich educational resources of Stanford University with adult students living in the Bay Area and beyond.

The Catalogue Editor Production Manager will manage the program's quarterly course scheduling as well as oversee drive the production of the program's course catalogues from inception to distribution. (Approximately 35,000 course catalogue are printed every three months). S/he will also manage relationships with external design and print teams as well as multiple copy editors. S/he reports to the Senior Manager of Course Planning Operations.


CORE DUTIES:

Curriculum Planning Development:

Oversees planning and scheduling of Continuing Studies courses in accordance with master academic calendar and catalogue production schedule. Conveys course planning and catalogue timelines and deadlines to program staff, instructors, curriculum coordinators, and catalogue production vendors. Gathers course details text for the course catalogues, and schedules more than 150 courses per quarter. 


Course Catalogue Production Content Oversight:

With the Senior Manager, oversees the content and accuracy of Continuing Studies' high-profile quarterly catalogues. Independently oversees the catalogue layout, and has responsibility for tracking the status of each catalogue draft over a three-month production period. Problem solves deadline conflicts and delays, and independently ensures deadlines and milestones are met.

Performs integral editing oversight during the print catalogue production process. Manages extensive edit review processes. Approves CSP staff, instructor, curriculum coordinator, and copy editor updates to the catalogue master drafts in accordance with CSP's style guide writing conventions. Communicates pertinent revisions with course instructors, curriculum coordinators, and other stakeholders.

Manages vendor relationships with regard to producing and distributing the Continuing Studies course catalogue. Works directly with an outside graphic design team, printer, and multiple copy editors. Signs off on all bluelines press proofs. Supervises the distribution of 140,000+ course catalogues every year with circulation vendor. Works in a proactive manner to anticipate and resolve problems, suggest improvements, and find ways to streamline the course production processes.

Regularly reviews and recommends modifications to the production process as part of a continuous improvement focus (e.g., exploring new editing programs, etc.).

Budget Management:

Responsible for tracking all expenditures related to the catalogue. Processes vendor invoices and tracks/updates the catalogue production budget accordingly.

Administers the print bid process regularly. Works closely with external constituents including vendors and consultants (e.g., design firm, printer, mail house, catalogue distribution vendor) to ensure cost efficiency, high quality of materials, and adherence to deadlines.

Regularly reviews possible cost-saving modifications to the catalogue (e.g., exploring other paper options, page count changes, binding, etc.).

Qualifications:

Education Experience: Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong experience managing print projects, possessing a strong knowledge of traditional and digital printing. Comprehensive familiarity with all phases of book production, including in-depth knowledge of copy, editorial, project management, and the basic rudiments of art and design.

Understanding of typical book production graphic software. Ability to work in a diverse department to publish books within deadlines and budget. Ability to identify problems swiftly when they arise and exercise good judgment in developing solutions. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Ability to work independently. Ability to interface with internal departments and external book publication/production community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully. Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >50 pounds. Good visual acuity including color vision.
