Senior SQL Server Database Administrator

Position Responsibilities:

The Senior SQL Server DBA will ensure the integrity, high availability, security and performance of our enterprise SQL databases. Will also perform the duties for daily maintenance, monitoring, performance analysis, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and user assistance required of all database environments. The DBA will work with a cross-section of internal IT organizations, including other DBA's, systems analysts, developers, outside consultants and system administrators. The Senior SQL DBA will participate in Information Technology and Business application projects as the primary database administrator throughout project development lifecycle.

Essential Functions
Strategy & Planning
• Keep corporate data model diagrams and data dictionary information current.
• Enforce corporate data policies, such as backup/recovery, security and database maintenance routines and schedules.
• Strategic database design, planning and execution with product and application owners.
• Plan, and schedule the installation and testing of new products and improvements to current systems, such as the installation of new databases and tools.
• Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure.
• Identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems and technologies to serve as a source of information and advice for upper management.
• Evaluate tools and new product releases. Research new features and engineering.
• Develop methods and processes for integrating different products so they work properly together.
• Analyze and sustain capacity and performance requirements.
• Analyze, consolidate and tune database for optimal efficiency.
• Perform capacity planning including allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements.

Acquisition & Deployment
• Participate in regional and worldwide projects (deployments).
• Provide technical specifications for application enhancements.
• Participate in application customizations and extensions.
• Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, tools, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

Operational Management
• Performance monitoring and tuning of development, test and production environments including identification and tuning of poor-performing application code and/or database configuration.
• Identify and automate regular database and application maintenance tasks.
• Monitor the systems development activities as they relate to the database development effort.
• Work with Developers, System and Network administrators in a multinational environment to support and improve system performance and stability.
• Review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and cost required to successfully accomplish a project.
•Create schemes, tables, procedures, permissions and indexes.
• Monitor systems and platforms for availability.
• Oversee backup, clustering, mirroring, replication and failover.
• Restore and recover corrupted databases.
• Install and test upgrades and patches.
• Implement security and encryption.
• Provide 24/7 support for critical situations.
• Work with vendor technical support on technical issues.
• Work with customers to build and formulate business requirements.
• Develop documentation, white papers and presentations to all levels of management and technical staff.
• Act as a Subject Matter Expert in the discovery and investigation of critical problems as required.

Experience Required:

Knowledge & Experience
• 5+ years IT experience.
• 5+ years experience in working with SQL Server database technologies.
• Experience with Log Shipping, Mirroring, and High Availability (cluster servers).
• Experience with implementing and supporting SQL, SSIS.
• Strong understanding of SQL Server databases environment and architecture.
• Strong understanding of computer operating systems like Windows, Linux or Unix.
• Working knowledge of key system packages and utilities.
• Full lifecycle development of complex system and application software.
• Database performance and optimization experience with large databases utilizing SAN storage.
• 5+ years of experience in multi-server environments.
• Exposure to other RDBMS systems such as Oracle, MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• Experience using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Education Required:

Formal Education & Certification
• Bachelor degree or foreign equivalent in related field or equivalent experience.
• Certifications in SQL Server Administration desirable.

Additional Comments:

Incidental Functions• Monitor the database environment to identify and recommend alternatives/enhancements.• Consult with end users and developers to recommend the most appropriate database solution. • Assist application development with database design considerations. • Assist in the designs of data models.• Assist in performance tuning, and monitoring of all system tiers.• Assist with various projects as may be required to contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work.• Participate in hiring activities and fulfilling affirmative action obligations and ensuring compliance with the equal employment opportunity policy.• Minimal travel as required.• Work outside the standard office 7.5 hour workday as required.
