We are seeking a highly motivated and meticulous Engineer to help MarkLogic and our Customers better understand the performance characteristics of our product. This position reports to the Director of Support and Performance in the Engineering group.
 
MarkLogic Server is a complex, multi-threaded transactional system; it is a platform on which large-scale content applications are built.  It is installed in equally complex data center environments complete with load balancers, caching servers and high-performance Ethernet and storage networks.  The Performance Engineer will be responsible for devising tests that characterize how the server performs given real-world use cases and common operating environments.  A working understanding of the performance impact of all the components in the operating environment is crucial.  These include application caching, filesystem caching, processor caching, network latency, storage subsystem latency, resources contention at all layers, etc.
 
The Performance Engineer will work with server architects to identify as well as resolve system performance bottlenecks and disseminate information about performance test results and derived best practices to a wide and varied audience.  You will become an expert in the architecture of MarkLogic Server and the optimization of its applications.
 
 
Must Have
·         Experience with characterizing and solving multi-threaded, transactional systems performance problems
·         Expert in lab work, applying the scientific method, devising fair tests
·         Able to develop software tools necessary to conduct performance work
·         Detail-oriented communicator about technical problems, their causes and their solutions
·         Experience with using a software or hardware performance benchmark harness
·         Query optimization experience (e.g. tuning and optimizing SQL or MapReduce)
·         Experience with collecting, graphing and interpreting system health statistics

Nice to Have

·         Programming experience with Java, XQuery or C++
·         Experience with creating a performance benchmark for a software or hardware product
·         Experience with tuning Linux, Solaris or Windows for particular workloads
·         Experience with configuring and tuning storage systems for particular workloads
·         Customer-facing experience, able to discuss technical material with lay audiences
·         Working knowledge of XML and XML-related software tools
