Job Summary

The Director of Labor Relations is responsible for coordinating the labor and employee relations programs and functions. This position exists to provide corporate oversight for planning, development and management of labor relations activities, developing long-range contract negotiation strategies and coordinating the negotiation preparations for affiliates. The Director of Labor Relations will have primary responsibility for employee relations issues, acting as a corporate resource to management and Service Center personnel for resolution of problems arising in the workplace.

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

•          Formulate and recommend program goals and objectives in all areas of labor relations

•          Assure that the company is in compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement

•          Investigate problems such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, and employee and applicant appeals and grievances, and provide guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to senior management

•          Provide strategic planning support for bargaining, including definition of issues, company position, and cost modeling for all bargaining

•          Develop and implement collective bargaining and labor relations strategies and policies and procedures in accordance with corporate policies, procedures and collective bargaining objectives

•          Negotiate and oversee the Company’s labor contracts

•          Serve as an advocate for Angelica senior management while maintaining professional and productive relationships with union leadership

•          Provide leadership and direction in negotiations to ensure oversight of key issues (such as pension language, management rights, successor language, health care cost share, etc.)

•          Manage discipline and discharge functions, and assume responsibility for the uniform and equitable application of policies across Angelica

•          Provide daily labor and employee relations support to Service Center staff, as needed

•          Design and implement database of labor and works council agreements company-wide

•          Coordinate with management to assure adherence to company policies for initiating disciplinary and staffing decisions

•          Coordinate grievance activity at and beyond 3rd step, including coordinating arbitrations through designated outside counsel

•          Coordinate implementation of bargained changes, especially in benefits area

•          Manage all aspects of the grievance and arbitration process under the collective bargaining agreements

•          Design, validate and implement Angelica’s annual Employee Satisfaction Survey, and report on results and implications to senior management

•          Help train senior management in the prevention and resolution of labor relations issues

•          Develop quantitative and qualitative metrics to communicate labor effectiveness

•          Research and draft responses to attorney correspondence, lawsuits, works councils and/or complaints filed from agencies

•          Collaborate with Director of Employee Relations to maintain union-free status

Travel Required

The Director of Labor Relations position requires 30-40% travel. Employees are responsible for creating and submitting expense reports each week for expenditures incurred during travel.

 

Minimum Qualifications

•B.A. or B.S. degree in Business or Public Administration, Human Resources Management, or closely related field

•7-10 years hands-on labor relations experience, with extensive experience adjudicating grievances and managing a grievance and arbitration process plus 5 years minimum labor contract negotiations experience (including first chair experience)

•Thorough knowledge in the following areas:

oMerit systems: job content, qualifications, educational and training requirements of a wide variety of occupations and wage and salary administration

oLaws and regulations as they pertain to HR: Family and Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Civil Rights Act of 1964, ADEA and other state and federal labor law

•Strong analytical, project management, organization and time management skills

•Able to thrive and succeed in a fast-paced, results-driven environment

•Strong sense of personal accountability and self-motivation, with a strong customer orientation

•Excellent written, oral and positive influential communication skills; specifically, able to prepare comprehensive reports and represent ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

•Solid knowledge of MS Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications

•SPHR

•Bilingual

•Master’s degree

•Lean or Six Sigma or other continuous improvement experience

•Manufacturing or Operations exposure

 

Work Environment

The working environment is indoors and is seasonally heated and cooled with minimal noise levels.  The position requires considerable sitting, typing and the ability to move objects of less than 25 pounds.  The position requires the ability to communicate in person, telephonically and via email.
