Associate Director of Communications (and Media Relations)
San Francisco based Educational Institution
Basic Function Scope of Position:
The Assistant Director of Communications and Media/Public Relations is responsible for developing, planning and implementing comprehensive communications strategies and for directing PR efforts and marcom. This role provides direction and develops message strategy for email marketing, social media marketing, events, and public relations activities. Additionally, the Asst. Director of Communications and Media Relations oversees development and editing of internally produced publications (both print and digital). This role is responsible for managing and developing three direct reports, hiring and managing an external media relations representative, freelance writers, and photographers.
Essential Functions:
Develop compelling and targeted brand and programmatic messages to strengthen brand awareness and reputation among various audience segments, including prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, prospective donors, and local employers.
Manage the research, writing and editing of content for a variety of collateral (e.g., brochures, newsletters, annual reports, magazines, etc.), website, direct mailers, emails, press releases and fundraising appeals.
Develop and oversee implementation of social media engagement strategies.
Collaborate with staff to identify and write brand-building stories to promote through a variety of communication vehicles.
Manage an external media relations representative who is responsible for writing press releases, publishing them to website and news distribution services, and pitching stories to news media; help respond to news media requests.
Ensure that all marketing communications are of the highest professional quality and meet university editorial style and brand guidelines.
Analyze primary and secondary market research (including peer institution surveys, student and alumni surveys, etc.) to enhance message relevancy and alignment.
Serve as the marketing communications lead.
Contribute to the department's fundraising communications needs, including promotion of philanthropic support and the creation of collateral materials that will enhance giving.
Collaborate on the development and implementation of an internal communications strategy.
Contribute to website redesign as needed, including site architecture and content organization.
Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, English, business administration or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
Master's degree in Business Administration or related field is strongly preferred but not required.
Minimum 5 years of experience in marketing communications with increasing responsibility, including development of communications plans and strategies, brand and product message platforms, content writing and editing, managing creation of online and print publications and marketing materials, and developing, launching and managing new marketing/communications programs, tracking and analyzing key performance indicators, and identifying and implementing improvements that optimize results.
Minimum 3 years of experience working in a higher ed institution, a nonprofit organization, advertising/brand/PR agency, or a service industry.
Experience in and solid knowledge of best practices and principles of email marketing, public relations, and social media marketing.
Demonstrated leadership skills, with experience managing individuals or project teams and external service providers.
Uses sound judgment to problem solve and make decisions independently, knowing when to escalate to leader.
Inclined to innovate and identify continuous improvements (instead of maintaining status quo).
Ability to influence at all levels in an organization; excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills with a service-minded approach.
Able to work effectively, both independently and as part of cross-functional/departmental teams.
Proficiency in writing, editing and proofreading skills.
Able to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to produce quality work within tight deadlines.
Demonstrates a sense of urgency and excellent follow-through on all projects.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Articulates clearly and effectively in both written and verbal communications.
Self-motivated, self-directed, and results-driven.
