Job Description
Director of Development

Purpose:

The Director of Development will work as part of a senior management team, advising and collaborating with the Managing and Artistic Directors regarding the development of contributed revenue sources to support San Jose Rep's mission. The Director of Development will create and execute fundraising strategies to meet the financial goals of the organization, while being responsible for managing all development department budgets, staff, and campaigns.

Relationships:

• The Director of Development reports to and consults regularly with the Managing Director
• The Director of Development communicates with the Artistic Director as necessary to be familiar with artistic programming and goals
• The Director of Development works closely with all senior department heads such as Marketing, Production and Education and Outreach regarding fundraising efforts, special events and donor cultivation
• The Director of Development works closely with Trustees, particularly the Trustee Development Chair, to motivate, train and coordinate efforts to achieve fundraising success
• The Director of Development establishes and maintains relationships with donors and potential donors as necessary to expand donor base and meet financial goals
• The Director of Development supervises all development staff, defining roles as appropriate

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Create and implement an annual Development Plan and strategy
• Lead and manage the organization's overall development efforts to raise an annual budget of 1.5M in contributed revenue
• Major Gift/Donor Support – Lead the effort to solicit, engage and nurture relationships with theatre patrons, donors and the community to major gift status
• Cultivate and steward relationships with current and potential corporate and foundation sponsors
• Engage in research to identify new individual, corporate, foundation, and government prospects
• Oversee grant proposal writing and reporting
• Oversee the planning and execution of all cultivation, stewardship and fundraising events
• Database and Records Management: navigate and execute functions in San Jose Rep's donor database "Tessitura" to maintain accurate donor and prospect transactions; ensure gift acknowledgements are sent on a timely basis
• Produce solicitation materials to utilize in direct mail appeals, face to face meetings, and general collateral
• Financial Reporting – Maintain accurate accounting of all contributed revenue and its sources.
Develop and monitor annual fundraising budgets, modifying expenditures and re-forecasting on a regular basis, depending upon cash flow and success of fundraising campaigns to ensure financial goals are met.
• Support the Board of Directors, primarily through the Development Committee, to develop and steward effective and strategic relationships with major donors and prospects
• Planned Giving Program – track progress of pending Legacy and Bequest gifts. Increase donor participating in legacy giving
• Recruit and manage volunteers for development as interns or on an as-needed basis

Qualifications:

• Minimum Bachelor's degree and 5+ years in development/arts or theatre experience preferred
• Passion for the arts
• Proven track record of supervising staff, successfully motivating and supporting board members and volunteers. Success in securing major gifts and grants, sponsorships, and achieving annual fundraising goals
• Ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports
• Strategic thinker and persuasive communicator who understands the value of relationship building
• Familiarity with the local community
• Strong writing, editing, database, computer and Internet skills (including social media)
• Event management experience
• Excellent management and organizational skills, and attention to detail
• Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours, as it pertains to donor events, board and finance committee meetings and individual cultivation
