HBS Community Partners is recognized throughout the Bay Area as a truly valuable resource for nonprofit organizations, and is the model for other alumni community service programs around the country. From its inception, it has consistently provided opportunities for alumni to apply their business and management skills as volunteer consultants working on challenging and worthwhile projects in the nonprofit sector.
The HBS Community Partners Steering Committee is looking for a new Executive Director to expand our contributions to the Bay Area nonprofit community. The Executive Director role requires passion and commitment, and is a personally rewarding role with a flexible schedule.

About HBS Community Partners
HBS Community Partners is a program of the HBS Alumni Association of Northern California (HBSA/NC) that provides Bay Area alumni the opportunity to apply their management and business skills as volunteer consultants working on business related projects for nonprofit organizations. Established in 1986, it is the largest and longest operating such program among all HBS clubs.
Since 1986, over 650 HBS alumni have worked on Community Partners projects for over 320 diverse nonprofit organizations throughout the Bay Area. HBS Community Partners provides more than $1.5MM in pro-bono consulting services annually. In 2008, the Community Partners program was honored by the President´s Council on Service and Civic Participation for its commitment to providing volunteer business consulting services to nonprofits in various regions throughout the United States. In 2011, Community Partners celebrates its 25th anniversary of continuous service to the Bay Area Non-Profit Community.
Community Partners also administers the club's scholarships for Bay Area executive directors to attend a one-week executive education program at HBS.
HBS Community Partners Objectives/Goals:
• To encourage local alumni to become involved with the Bay Area community through community service
• To serve local alumni by providing opportunities for them to channel their interests into community service
• To provide local alumni with nonprofit/social enterprise resources and connections both in the Bay Area and at HBS
• To serve the Bay Area nonprofit community through pro-bono consulting assistance, board listings and scholarships to attend HBS executive education programs
• To be a leader and serve as a model for all HBS alumni organizations in the area of nonprofit/social enterprise involvement
The Executive Director Role:
Under the direction of the HBS Community Partners Steering Committee, the Executive Director leads the Community Partners program in the following areas: organizational planning, goal setting, policy development and program implementation. S/he is responsible for project procurement, volunteer recruitment and maintaining visibility for the program with the Bay Area non-profit community and with the HBSA/NC Alumni base.
Responsibilities:
o Provide strong and collaborative leadership and hands-on experience in running the CP program and developing and implementing programs
o Work with the Steering Committee to establish and maintain a clear vision and strategy for the organization
o Guide the development and delivery of the core program components, including finding and screening projects, recruiting alumni as volunteer consultants and providing technical and resources assistance
o Oversee the scholarship process for HBSA/NC, advertising the opportunity to Bay Area nonprofits, sending out applications and work with the Steering Committee to select the candidates to receive the scholarships
o Meet the expectations and needs of multiple stakeholders including clients, volunteers, steering committee members, and HBSA/NC board members. Work collaboratively with these partners to ensure their continued support and commitment
o Develop strategic partnerships with foundations, community based organizations, and other management assistance non-profits to expand the visibility and reach of Community Partners
o Lead the program's marketing and public relations activities. Serve as chief spokesperson for the program and its mission in the community
o Maintain CP site within HBSA/NC website and maintain database of past projects and project resources and volunteers
o Work with HBS Social Enterprise in promoting the work of Community Partners groups across the country
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Demonstrated understanding of the range of issues facing nonprofit and social enterprise organizations
• Awareness of nonprofit resources in the Bay Area
• Experience in successfully organizing and managing consulting projects
• Demonstrated leadership qualities
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional relationships in both the non-profit and for-profit communities
• Ability to work well with the alumni organization and to engage steering committee members, volunteers, and others in the alumni community
• Ability to design, develop and deliver marketing and public relations messages through various media
• Outstanding communication skills
• A Harvard Business School degree is preferred but not required
Commitment and Compensation
The Executive Director is expected to put in the hours required to meet the objectives and goals of the program. Although there may be an initial learning curve, this is not expected to be a full-time job, and there is flexibility in structuring the work. The Executive Director salary is commensurate with these requirements and is competitive with salaries for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.
