Rocketship Education Mission and Vision
Founded in 2006, Rocketship Education, a 501(c)(3) non‐profit corporation, is building a national network of high performing urban college preparatory elementary charter schools. Rocketship's mission is to eliminate the achievement gap in public education, by creating a network of K‐5 elementary charter schools in high‐need neighborhoods in major cities in the United States over the next decade. Each Rocketship school has a clear and simple goal: that students achieve grade‐level proficiency by the time they graduate from elementary school. Rocketship has pioneered a transformative education model – the hybrid school platform – that combines traditional classroom teaching to enhance and extend students' critical thinking skills, with individualized instruction using tutors and technology to strengthen students' basic skills, and to serve the needs of each and every child.
In just five years, Rocketship schools have achieved stunning results. In 2010, flagship school Rocketship Mateo Sheedy Elementary earned an API score of 925 for the second year in a row (on par with the wealthy Palo Alto school district), and Rocketship Sí Se Puede Academy earned an API score of 886 in its first year of operation. This places the two Rocketship schools in #5 and #15 positions, respectively, for all California low-income schools. Rocketship is on a rapid, exciting growth trajectory: next year, it will have five schools in operation, and plans to grow to 30 schools by 2015.
