This position will involve managing Rovi Corporation's international patent portfolio of over 5100 patents and patent applications as well as the company's other intellectual property assets such as its trademark portfolio. The successful candidate will work closely with outside counsel and coordinate with other in-house counsel to manage and develop the patent portfolio to drive the company's active worldwide patent licensing program. The position reports to Senior Director of Intellectual Property.
The ideal person will have at least 5 to 10 years of law firm and in-house experience in patent prosecution and portfolio management, particularly in support of an active worldwide patent licensing program. The person should be decisive, organized, and highly detail oriented as he will be required to make strategic decisions on high volume of patent matters. The person should also possess working knowledge of all aspects of intellectual property law.
The hired candidate will be expected to work out of Rovi's Santa Clara headquarter, though candidates from Southern California that could work out of Rovi's Burbank office will also be considered.
The responsibilities will include some or all of the following:
Managing a large international patent portfolio to drive the company's patent licensing program
Developing the portfolio by working with company's engineers and product management to mine for inventions and filing new applications worldwide
Managing outside counsel in patent and other IP matters
Conducting meetings and presentations such as brainstorming meetings, patent committee meetings, patent presentations, etc.
Coordinating with and supporting in-house licensing and litigation counsel in licensing and litigation matters
Advising other in-house counsel on patent and other IP matters
Advising the marketing department on trademark matters
Working with other members of the patent prosecution team in overseeing IP-related administrative matters
Ideal Experience & Qualification:
California Bar and USPTO registration, and preferably an undergraduate degree in BSEE
A minimum of 5 to 10 years of law firm and in-house experience in patent prosecution and portfolio management, preferably in support of an active worldwide patent licensing program
Solid experience in US and international patent prosecution
A demonstrated ability to manage outside counsel
Experience in coordinating and conducting internal patent and brainstorming meetings
Solid working knowledge of trademark laws and demonstrated ability to make critical decisions on trademark matters
Experience with technology related to EPG (Electronic Program Guide), video codecs, DRM, and/or other similar areas is highly desirable
Excellent oral and written communication skills
