SE Skills and Requirements
Sales Engineers (SEs) by definition wear two hats - one for sales and one for engineering. They need to understand deep technical concepts and be able to relay them to both business and technical personnel alike. As a result, finding and cultivating good SEs can be a challenge. Depending on the type of product a company sells, the sales model, revenue goals, number of reps, etc., the skills and requirements for the SE can vary from heavy on the technical side to heavy on the sales/business side.
Although provides a service that is intuitive and easy to understand at a high level, it addresses the complex topic of Application Performance Management for web applications. It does so for five of the top web application programming languages, and is used by both large and small customers in nearly every vertical market. Given this and other unique aspects of 's service, following are some of the skills and requirements needed by an SE at :
Required Skills:
Engineering and/or development background. Preferably someone who has developed software and is a graduate in Computer Science or related field of engineering.
Knowledge of one or more supported platforms - Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby, Python and related libraries and packages. The more the better Over time should develop understanding of all platforms.
Good communicator/teacher. Someone who has firm understanding of technical concepts yet can translate said concepts into non-technical terms to be consumed by non-engineers.
Skilled at multi-tasking, juggling a high volume of customer requests, and working with multiple sales reps. Desired Skills:
Understands performance engineering concepts (deadlock, contention problems, scalability challenges, vertical/horizontal scaling, concurrency)
Knowledge of APM from prior professional experience in the space Preferably has worked for one of the big 3 APM vendors (WIly/CA, IBM, HP/Mercury) as either a developer, professional services architect/consultant, SE, or technical support engineer.
Basic understanding of SaaS based sales processes and procedures and working with multiple sales reps in a volume based business model.
