The Opportunity
The opportunity is big, relevant and exciting: to play a lead role in aggressively positioning the pioneer in online real estate services while operating in a fast, fluid competitive environment that is transforming a bellwether industry. Nearly half of U.S. home sales today originate with information presented on the Internet and the real estate market continues to evolve through the use of mobile devices and social media. Move, Inc., which operates the REALTOR.com web site and other online assets, attracts more than 20 million unique users a month and intends to be on the cutting edge of these trends.
The Director of Corporate Communications will employ resources inside and outside the company to build the reputation of Move – its brands, its products and its people. As one of Move's top communications professionals, he or she will create and direct a focused and penetrating corporate PR strategy that makes use of traditional and emerging media channels and will be a critical contributor to positioning the company with all key constituents, including employees, consumers, the real estate industry and the financial markets.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be an accomplished communications executive who has experience in supporting companies of all sizes and corporate reputations, preferably in consumer technology, consumer services or other mass markets.
The Director of Corporate Communications will report to the Vice President of Corporate Communications, who resides within the centralized marketing organization led by the EVP of Marketing.
The successful candidate will be given significant opportunity to demonstrate his or her strategic and executional capabilities by partnering with the communications department head and working directly with senior leaders in helping guide the company through critical issues and seize important opportunities as they relate to communications. In addition, the Director will play a key role as Move, Inc. evolves its brand strategy, launches new products and expands aggressively into the mobile market.
As a senior communications executive, the successful candidate must be an insight-driven, highly organized thinker with the poise, presence and persuasiveness to work effectively with the company's C-level officers as well as all other levels and functions of the organization. Possessing impeccable partnership skills and tact is key to success in this role. Additionally, this individual must possess exceptional written and verbal skills and a proven record of managing opinion-leading, national news media.
The role includes managing outside contractors and has the potential to grow to manage internal employees.
Specific areas of responsibility include:
Media Relations
•The Director will possess an intimate understanding of the role played by the nation's news media in building corporate reputations and in efficiently and effectively reaching key audiences.
•He or she will know from experience that access, timeliness and credibility are at the heart of successful media relations.
•And he or she will maximize the company's working relationships with the news media – especially the Tier 1 national media that define the news agenda in the U.S. – to build the company's leadership image.
•The Director will be a major contributor to building an annual news "pipeline" that fully exploits organic news and creates additional opportunities in support of the company's business objectives and positioning.
•The Director will ensure that Move, Inc. attains the status of "must quote" in news stories about real estate and will represent the company as a media spokesperson.
Corporate PR & Issues Management
•An overarching priority for the Director will be managing communications traditionally transacted by public companies. News important to the business – including new product introductions, significant investments in its core capabilities and major marketing initiatives in support of its brand portfolio – will be a key focus.
•Understanding that corporate reputations take years to build and often minutes to be diminished or destroyed, the Director will anticipate and manage issues affecting the well-being of the business, for example the integrity of Move's content, concerns over privacy and relevant legislative activity.
Management Counsel
•The Director will serve as a trusted communications advisor to Move's managers, including the executive staff and their functional leads.
•The successful candidate will have the experience, confidence and fact-based reasoning to guide management through the ebb and flow of corporate communications in a competitive, 24/7 media environment and will inspire management confidence in the company's communications strategy and leadership.
•He or she will be an adept and helpful "coach" as executives actively undertake media interviews, public speeches and presentations and employee communications.
•The Director will be comfortable sharing with the company leaders what they need to hear, not necessarily what they wants to hear in a way that is not adversarial but constructive so that it can be heard.
Qualifications
•7-10 years of experience as a communications professional, with specific expertise in media relations and corporate reputation
•Bachelor's degree
•Experience with internet services and products is required
•Aptitude for both traditional and new media (blogs, social networks, etc.) in telling the company's story.
•Experience working within an organization where PR is not only valued but considered core to accomplishing organizational objectives
•Corporate communications experience in writing and editing press releases, talking points and Q&A, personally managing executive communications, and overseeing program design and implementation
•Proven success in working with outside PR agencies
•Possess unimpeachable ethics and have100% straightforward approach in all dealings inside and outside the company
