Last month I kicked off a series of key concepts for accelerating a job search with "Show Your Energy." This issue continues with "Briefer Is Better."
When you're in a 'marketing' mode, such as in a Career Search, or when exploring new opportunities internally, it's natural to want to tell people a lot of information. The thinking goes:
"I have to equip people, and I do that by telling them all about my goals, and my accomplishments related to those."
The problem with this thinking is that it's about telling, instead of about engaging.
Yes, it is important to equip people, but they need to WANT to be equipped. Until you've engaged them, it doesn't matter how much information you provide, it's just going to wash over them, and likely bore them out of exactly the engagement you were seeking.
To combat this tendency, I want you to always be reminding yourself, "Briefer Is Better."
