Would you like to apply your expertise as a PR consultant to well-known, worldwide projects that support literacy for underserved populations, such as people with visual impairments, physical disabilities, severe learning disabilities or other learning challenges? Benetech's current literacy projects, Bookshare, Bookshare International and Route 66, support people with different disabilities in different populations around the world. Bookshare, the largest of the projects, creates and provides books in digital accessible formats for individuals with print disabilities. Bookshare is a very active program with many loyal members that will provide you with lots of source material for content. As our Public Relations consultant, your announcements and pitches will range from new products and breakthroughs in the industry to heart-warming stories about helping students read and get a better education.
You will be responsible for the planning and execution of Benetech's public relations for literacy, including Bookshare, Bookshare International and Route 66. To be successful in this role, you'll be on target with execution and deliverables, tapping into the talents and expertise of other members of the Bookshare team. You will write press releases, manage review cycles, and pitch leading to lots of positive coverage. You'll write and gather content for our blog and support our social networking on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites.
This is a six-month, part-time contract position. The company is based in Palo Alto. The position reports to the Director of Marketing. Please specify rate requirements in your cover letter.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Manage all public-facing Literacy communications, including press releases, blogs and social media
* Design and execute creative media campaigns that further the goals of the Literacy projects
* Write press releases, blogs and other public-facing content
* Collaborate and coordinate with other Literacy team members to develop content
* Pitch and place articles and multi-media content in worldwide media, including education, special education, assistive technology, publishing, social networking sites
* Collaborate and leverage expertise of other Bookshare team members on pitching and placement in a broad range of mainstream, worldwide media, including education, special education, assistive technology, publishing, social networking sites
* Create and maintain key messaging documents
* Manage review cycles
* Build and maintain solid relationships with the press and online media
* Manage/maintain shared documents with editorial contacts, calendars, pitching and placements
* Participate in strategy planning and development
* Participate marketing meetings
Qualifications
Required
* Minimum of 5 years of public relations experience in corporate and/or agency settings. Experience in both a definite plus.
* Demonstrated success with both written skills and media placements
* A combination of skills for communication, planning and execution
* Quick grasp of and ability to communicate technical concepts
* Quick grasp of and ability to communicate high-level messages
* Excellent written skills for a variety of different content types
* Examples of using social networking for corporate purposes
* Ability to write and produce solid drafts quickly
* A solid writing style and well-trained eye for grammatical accuracy in written work
* Strong interpersonal skills that yield positive team working relationships
* Solid organizational skills
* Energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude
Highly desirable
* Empathy and experience with individuals with special needs, such as print disabilities
* Experience with educational and/or publishing media
* A passion for making a difference
